The Boghossian Foundation presents Shape of absence, an exhibition initiated at the invitation of Louma Salamé, which bears witness to the ongoing heritage tragedy unfolding in Syria since 2011. he exhibition is centered on Hrair Sarkissian’s monumental installation Stolen Past, presented in dialogue with Iconem’s immersive images of the site of Palmyra. A poignant reflection on disappearance, memory, and resilience.

The monumental installation presents forty-eight lithophanes arranged like funerary stelae, creating an atmosphere of contemplation and remembrance. When illuminated, they reveal images reminiscent of black-and-white photographs depicting artefacts that disappeared from the Raqqa Museum in Syria.

With William Kentridge

William Kentridge began his artistic career at the height of the political struggle against the apartheid regime in his native South Africa. His work bears witness to a profound commitment – at once social, political and poetic – that continues to shape his artistic practice to this day.

Kentridge’s artistic output ranges from drawings, animated films and sculptures to prints, installations and videos. These works often emerge while he is directing a theatre or opera production, another field to which he devotes his energies. I am not me, the horse is not mine, William Kentridge’s solo exhibition at Bozar, offers a comprehensive overview of his oeuvre from the early 1980s to the present day. Several of his major stage productions receive special attention. The exhibition highlights the performative and collaborative nature of Kentridge’s practice, in which he allows art to evolve into a space for political inquiry, historical reckoning and poetic transformation.

Borrowed from Johann Sebastian Bach, the title Matthäus-Passion refers here to a composition of autonomous voices, in which each presence acts upon the others.

Passion is understood here as a state, one of intensity, where works coexist and test one another. The artist stands amid that which has shaped him, not to produce a synthesis, but to sustain its living tension, beyond homage.

Matthäus-Passion is a place where looking becomes an undeniably physical experience; where art history is no longer a backdrop but an active material; where works do not merely respond to one another ; they persist alongside us.

Daniel Buren was one of the 51 international artists who created a work in situ, integrated in the daily living space of the residents who were willing to open up their house for the artist and subsequently to the public. Buren’s work, Le Décor et son Double, was conceived as a work in two parts. In accordance with the concept of ‘Chambres d’Amis’, Daniel Buren realised his in situ work in the guest room of the private residence of Annick and Anton Herbert. He applied his ‘outil visuel’ on the walls of the guest room.

The artist, however, refused to entirely abandon the space of the museum – as Hoet intended it – and placed a complete and fully identical reconstruction of the guest room within the walls of the public Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent, which was still part of the Museum of Fine Arts at that time. At the end of the exhibition, the Herberts retained the intervention in their guest room and the work currently forms part of the collection of Herbert Foundation. The public part of Le Décor et son Double was reconstructed in 2011 and included in the collection of S.M.A.K.

A truly immense journey invites you on a voyage without a fixed destination – an exploration of the forces that propel people, ideas and artistic practices across geographies and histories, from the early 1900s to the present. More than 350 major works, predominantly from the Centre Pompidou and Kanal, but also from other Belgian public and private collections are gathered within the exhibition.

Inspired by the museum’s location along the Charleroi-Brussels canal – a historical conduit of trade, exchange and migration – A truly immense journey unfolds in three movements. The first examines stories of circulation, tracing how people around the world, including in Belgium, are displaced for political, social or environmental reasons. Another floor situates early 20th-century European Modernism within its colonial entanglements with Africa, Oceania and the Caribbean, and highlights the role of travelling and migrating artists in disseminating new artistic languages. The final section places the visitor in motion, showing how artists across geographies and generations – from Constructivism, De Stijl and Bauhaus to Minimalism and Kinetic art – moved beyond traditional static forms to embrace chance and participation.

Bendt Eyckermans’ (b. 1994, Antwerp, Belgium) paintings are shrouded in a dreamlike, mysterious atmosphere. Within his universe, which is characterized by a muted colour palette, he incorporates elements from his immediate surroundings alongside art historical echoes. His paintings often possess a sculptural dimension through their focus on texture and depth. Family history also plays a major role in his work: Eyckermans comes from five generations of sculptors and craftsmen. The sculptures and objects they left behind remain in the studio where he works today – the former workspace of his predecessors – and their visual language resonates subtly in his paintings.

Eyckermans begins with photographs, translating them into paintings through preparatory sketches. The influence of photography and film is evident in his compositions, in which elements are deliberately omitted from the frame. In this way, he interweaves personal and art-historical references with multiple media, resulting in paintings that bear witness to a distinctive and idiosyncratic style.

Zvavahera has developed a distinctive artistic language that embodies the visible and invisible force fields born from her own “inner battles.” Her work, which weaves together personal and collective experience, is animated by a syncretic blend of Christian traditions and the spiritual dimensions of Shona culture in Zimbabwe. 

The exhibition in WIELS encompasses early paintings exploring themes akin to the artist’s experience of womanhood, dreamscapes incorporating elements of her surroundings such as leaves and lace, all the way to her most recent venture into ceramics.
