Galerie Zwart Huis was founded in 2001 in Knokke, originally located in Villa De Beir, a modernist residence by architect Huib Hoste. From the beginning, the gallery focused on contemporary Belgian art, especially figurative painting and drawing, complemented by conceptual art, sculpture, and photography. It quickly built a strong reputation with solo exhibitions by artists such as Carl De Keyzer, Luc Deleu and Liliane Vertessen. In 2007 the gallery moved to a new space on the Knokke seafront and in 2017 to the Rivoli Building in Brussels. Since 2015 Zwart Huis has been directed by Elke Helbig, representing both established and emerging Belgian artists, including Robin Vermeersch, Stefan Peters, Colin Waeghe, Peter Lagast and Stief DeSmet.
