Shortly after the end of World War I, the aristocratic-sounding name Tour d’Onasky popped up in numerous avant-garde periodicals. This mysterious and genderless name was the pseudonym of a young Antwerp artist: Marthe Donas. In the early 1920s, her colourful cubist and abstract paintings and collages were exhibited across Europe, and as far away as the United States and Japan.

In 1938, René Magritte gives a lecture at the KMSKA on his vision of reality. He discourses on the origins and development of his art, as well as the history of the surrealist movement in Belgium. Under the title La ligne de vie (The Life Line), this lecture, the second after the one at the International Exhibition of Surrealism in London, was the most important Magritte ever gave on his work.

Eugeen Van Mieghem draws Antwerp in constant motion. In the early 20th century, the city transformed at lightning speed. Electric lighting, cars and trams were transforming the cityscape and the port was undergoing explosive growth. The city lived 24/7. Eugeen Van Mieghem recorded all this on paper. He had an eye for high and low culture, work and pleasure, love, passion and the harsh reality of life. He sketched continuously. His eye was his camera, and his hand drew with the same speed as the glances he snatched of his subjects. The focus of this exhibition is Van Mieghem’s pastels and drawings: two techniques perfectly suited to his nervous disposition. Like a tireless reporter, he captured the dynamics of daily life in his spontaneous, rapidly-executed and whimsical sketches.

In Sea Through Skin, artist Bianca Baldi (SA, 1985) explores the complex and deeply personal phenomenon of racial passing (or playing white in South African vernacular): being perceived, or made to be perceived, as part of another racial group. This solo exhibition marks the culmination of Baldi’s PhD in the arts at Sint Lucas Antwerp, titled Play-White: Racial Passing and Embodied Images. Through her image-making practice, she reflects on how identity, perception, and power shape how we see — and are seen.

n 2017, Muhka reopened after an extensive renovation, showcasing a permanent collection presentation featuring reference artists, contemporary icons, historical pioneers, and key figures from the museum’s global collection. The collection is ever-evolving, reflecting the dynamic times we live in. In 2025, Muhka will present a renewed, focused collection showcasing approximately 30 key works by Flemish artists. Among them are figures who have lived and worked in the region—such as Marcel Broodthaers, Panamarenko, Luc Tuymans, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Otobong Nkanga, and Laure Prouvost—alongside artists with ties to Flanders, including Marlene Dumas, Jimmie Durham, Gordon Matta-Clark, and Nicola L. They are presented in dialogue with international artists from the Collection of the Flemish Community, including Cady Noland, Barbara Kruger, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Taus Makhacheva, and Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin. The collection presentation takes the postwar avant-garde in Antwerp as its starting point, using the past as a platform to explore the multipolar realities of both today and the future, structured around the three key angles of the collection: image, action, and society.

Wander among the many screens or take your time to absorb it all. You’ll be introduced to a wide range of dance styles, all collected from social media. You’ll see that dance is, in fact, a language shared by many cultures—spreading virally and traveling across continents.

Museum Mayer van den Bergh is undergoing renovations and is expanding. Fortunately, this doesn’t mean that the curtain has come down on the collection itself. A total of 43 museum enthusiasts from Antwerp have selected a work that will be on show for you to admire in the Maagdenhuis while the museum itself is closed. So why not look at the collection through their eyes and (re)discover a multitude of masterpieces?

From the 13th of September onward, the museum will uncover 300 years of stories from women in this house. Stories that urgently need to be told. About daughters who corrected proofs from an early age. About maids and ladies. About women who not only climbed the social ladders, but made the ladders too. Men are also welcome.
