Join us at 2 PM on Saturday 13 December for a special book signing with Belgian artist Katrien De Blauwer, presented by Gallery FIFTY ONE at Booth B19.
Born in 1969 in the provincial town of Ronse, Belgium, De Blauwer’s artistic journey began after a turbulent childhood that led her to Ghent, where she studied painting. She later enrolled at the Royal Academy of Antwerp to study fashion. Although she did not complete her fashion degree, these formative years were crucial: it was during this period that she created her first collage books—intimate studies and mood boards for potential collections.
These early “notebooks,” which she still preserves, are filled with sketches, fragments of images and texts, and quotations sourced from books, newspapers, and magazines. They reveal a constellation of influences—literature, art, music, fashion, cinema—that would come to define the tone and texture of her mature work.
After her studies, De Blauwer turned to collecting, cutting, and recomposing images as a form of therapeutic self-examination. This deeply personal artistic practice has continued to evolve over the years, culminating in a body of work that is both introspective and universally resonant.
Don’t miss this opportunity to meet the artist and discover more about her poetic and compelling visual universe.
Location: Gallery FIFTY ONE (Booth B19)
